Once you have met all the standards to be a health practitioner in Australia, you can apply for the visa under:

General Skilled Migration

This program is for people who don’t have the sponsorship of an employer but the skills that are highly demanded in Australia.

Those applying for the visa under GSM program must have their occupations listed on either Medium and long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) or Short Term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL). Also, it is mandatory to satisfy the point test by demonstrating your skills, age, English language proficiency, occupation and Australian qualification or work experience.

There are six types of visas included in the GSM program, however the ones which are applicable for nurses include:

Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189)

This visa is points based, designed specifically for skilled workers who are neither sponsored by an employer, eligible relative nor nominated by a state or territory government. It allows living and working in Australia as a permanent resident.

Skilled Nominated Visa (Subclass 190)

If you are nominated by an Australian state or territory government, you can apply for this visa and get entitled to live and work in Australia as a permanent resident.

Skilled Regional Visa (Subclass 489)

This visa allows living and working in the regional or low population growth metropolitan areas of Australia for up to 4 years. It also provides a pathway to apply for the permanent Skilled Regional Visa (subclass 887).

Employer Sponsorship

If you are sponsored by Australian employers, you can apply for the following visas:

Employer Nomination Scheme (Subclass 186)

It is a permanent residence visa for skilled worker which is divided into three categories- Direct Entry Stream, Temporary Residency Transition Stream and the Agreement Stream.

Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (Subclass 187)

This visa allows living and working as a permanent resident, but only in the regional Australia. It is also applied in under any of the three categories- Direct Entry Stream, Temporary Residency Transition Stream and the Agreement Stream.
