A carer visa (subclass 116 and 836) allows individuals to live in Australia permanently. This visa is for people who want to provide care or assistance to a relative in Australia who cannot get the care they need from other sources like family, welfare, hospitals, nursing, or community services. To be eligible, the relative in Australia must have either a long-term medical condition that prevents them from doing daily activities or need help to take care of a family member with a medical condition.

Eligibility Requirements

For Visa Applicants:

  • You must genuinely be willing and capable of caring for or assisting your relative in Australia.
  • You and all dependent family members in the visa application must meet health and character requirements.
  • You must be sponsored by the relative (who requires care and assistance) or their partner.
  • If you are applying for this visa to assist your relative in caring for a family member, that relative and the family member in need of care must reside in the same household.

For Relatives:

  • You must be a resident in Australia.
  • You must be a partner, child, sibling, parent, grandparent, grandchild, aunt, uncle, niece, nephew, or step-equivalent of the visa applicant.
  • You must be an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen (whether you need care or assistance for your family member).

For Sponsors:

  • You must be at least 18 years old.
  • You must be settled in Australia as an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen.
  • You must be the relative of the applicant who needs care (for themselves or a family member) or the spouse or de facto partner living in the same household with the relative in Australia.
