Advantages of the Adoption Visa

This visa provides the opportunity to:

• Reside, study, and work in Australia permanently
• Access public healthcare through Medicare, the national health system
• Seek Australian citizenship, subject to eligibility
• Bring over family members for permanent residency if they qualify
• Travel in and out of Australia for five years from the issuance of the visa

Applicant Eligibility Criteria

Adoptive parents should apply for this visa only if the child:

• is below the age of 18
• resides outside of Australia
• is being adopted or is already adopted by the sponsor
• fulfills health and character standards
• has proof of assurance of support

Note: If the child is under 18 years at the time of application but turns 18 before the visa is issued, they will not qualify for this visa.

Eligibility Criteria for Applicants

An adoptive parent should only lodge an application for this visa if the child

• is under 18 years of age
• living outside of Australia
• adopted or in the process of being adopted by the sponsor
• Meets health and character requirements
• an evidence for assurance of support

NOTE: If the child is under 18 years of age at the time of lodging an application but turned 18 before the visa is granted, the child will not be considered eligible for this visa.

An adoption visa will be denied if it compromises the welfare of a child under 18 years old.

Including Family Members in Your Visa Application

You can add your siblings to your visa application.

All dependent family members included must meet the necessary health and character requirements.

Health and Background Checks

Each applicant and their dependent family members included in the visa application must provide:

• Health examinations completed within 12 months prior to submitting the visa application
• Police clearance certificates from every country where you have resided for more than 12 months over the last ten years

Financial Obligations to the Australian Government

Before your visa is granted, you need to have cleared any outstanding financial obligations to the Australian government or have made arrangements to settle them.
