Temporary Work Visa (Subclass 457)

The Subclass 457 Temporary Work (Skilled) visa enables skilled workers to be employed in Australia for an approved business, for a period of up to four years.

To be eligible for this visa, you must be sponsored by an Australian business that has been approved by the government. The visa is designed to assist Australian businesses in filling skill gaps within their industries.

A business can sponsor a skilled worker under this visa if they are unable to source a suitable Australian citizen or permanent resident for the role.

The visa application can be lodged while you are either inside or outside Australia.
 

Privileges Granted by This Visa

This visa permits you to:

• Engage in employment in Australia for up to four years
• Relocate your family members to work or study in Australia
• Travel internationally and return to Australia multiple times

Visa Application Requirements

Here are the basic requirements for applying for this visa:

• You must have a nomination for an occupation on the Skilled Occupation Lists (Previously Form 1121i).
• You need to meet the skill criteria for your nominated occupation, which requires providing the right documents and possibly undergoing a skill assessment.
• You must fulfill any necessary registration and licensing obligations, which your sponsor should help with.
• You must demonstrate vocational English language proficiency, as per the requirements of tests like IELTS or OET, depending on your job.
• An approved business must nominate you.
• You need to meet health requirements and have sufficient health insurance, unless Medicare covers you.
• You must satisfy certain character requirements.
