Most of the top-ranked Universities offering undergraduate law programs (LLB) require students to take the LNAT in addition to grade requirements and their UCAS applications. Due to the volume of highly qualified candidates, an additional ‘tool’ was introduced to help differentiate the candidates and offer a candid look at their ability to process and communicate information.

What is the Law National Aptitude Test (LNAT)?

The LNAT is a test of a student’s critical thinking, reading, and writing skills made up of 2 Sections:

Section A (95-minute multiple choice)

Section B (40-minute essay portion)

When do you need to take the LNAT?

Bookings for LNAT places commence on the 1st of August and the exams may be taken from the 1st of September until 25 January for the August/September intake the following year.

Candidates who wish to apply for Oxford or Cambridge must take the LNAT prior to the submission of their UCAS application on the 15th of October.

How do you prepare for the LNAT?

As an aptitude test, the inclination for students is to believe that there is ‘nothing to be done’ in preparation. In fact, students need to be aware of the peculiarities of the LNAT (especially the multiple-choice section) and practice accordingly.

One common method is to simply endlessly attempt practice questions but a deeper look at why a particular question is being asked will lead to a much more comprehensive and consistent approach.

In the essay portion, essay choice, a well-reasoned approach to the topic, and an ability to introduce balance to a response are part of the basic skills needed to fulfill the criteria of Section B. As always, with essays self-criticism, review and feedback are the keys to improvement.

How we can help

If you’re still uncertain about how to prepare your LNAT, we are here to help! Simply give us a ring or contact us today to schedule a lesson with Regina.

Student Studying Online

Previously, we published a blog post that introduced the ISEE and compared it to its alternative, the SSAT. Now it’s the turn of the SSAT to get its own dedicated blog post! Like the ISEE, the SSAT is also a test that is used for private school admissions. Here’s what we need to know if we’re thinking about taking the test.

Quick Facts

There are three versions of the SSAT: Upper Level, Middle Level, and Elementary Level. The Elementary Level test is 2 hours and 5 minutes, while the Upper and Middle Level tests are both 3 hours and 10 minutes.

Applying To...
LevelUS grade systemUK equivalentHK equivalent
SSAT UpperGrade 9 and aboveY10 and aboveForm 3 and above
SSAT MiddleGrade 6-8Y7-9P6 to Form 2
SSAT LowerGrade 4-5Y5-6P4 to P5

Most people will be taking either the SSAT Upper or the SSAT Middle tests. For these two levels, the test has four sections in the following order:

  1. Quantitative – This section tests common math concepts like number operations, basic algebra, and geometry
  2. Reading – This section includes longer reading passages and tests reading comprehension skills such as inference and main idea.
  3. Verbal – This section is split into two halves. The first half is composed of synonym questions, while the second half asks the test-taker to complete a series of verbal analogies.
  4. Quantitative – This is the second half of the test’s math questions.

There is also an essay component. Just like the ISEE, your essay is not graded, but it will be submitted along with your test score when applying to schools.

Finally, just like the SSAT, your ISEE score will have a scaled score component and a corresponding percentile score. The percentile score is used by schools to determine how well you did when compared to other test-takers in your grade.

Differences to ISEE

So how should I decide if the SSAT is right for me? A few things:

Are you a bookworm?

The SSAT’s Verbal section is infamous for including words that even adults may not be familiar with. It can be painful to try to cram vocabulary, but those who have read widely for years may actually recall a lot of the words from their favorite novels.

Do you like poetry?

The SSAT’s Reading section contains shorter passages than the ISEE’s Reading Comprehension passage, but there may be harder material like poems or passages taken from older documents. Before deciding on the SSAT or ISEE, it could be worth thinking about your strengths as a reader. How quickly can you read an article? Do you read widely, or have you spent your time reading only fiction or non-fiction?

Are you a paper person or a screen person?

If you’re based in Hong Kong, the SSAT does not offer online testing options, so for those who are better at online tests, have a good look at the ISEE. Pay particular attention to the questions unique to the ISEE, such as the Quantitative Reasoning questions about value comparison, and see if you feel confident tackling them.

How we can help

If you’re still not sure whether the SSAT is the right fit for your admissions needs, we’re happy to help! Simply give us a ring to see if we can arrange a mock test, trial 1-on-1 lessons, or even a FREE 30 minutes with our Admissions Consultants to discuss testing, school applications, and more!

For those of us who are not native English speakers, you may find that an IELTS score is among the requirements for a school application or a job application. If you’re looking for tips on how to get started with your IELTS prep, you’ve come to the right place!

First, Know The Tests

Let’s first make sure that you are taking the right version of IELTS! The IELTS Academic test is the one used for school applications, while the IELTS General test is used for work. This is important because the two tests have some key differences:

 IELTS AcademicIELTS General
ListeningNo differencesNo differences
ReadingTexts with academic topics and general readingTexts to do with everyday life, the workplace, and general reading
Writing Task 1 - Describe visual information in your own words
Task 2 - Write an essay about a point of view or problem
Task 1 - Write a letter related to everyday interactions
Task 2 - Write an essay about a point of view or problem
SpeakingNo differencesNo differences

After determining which version of the test is right for you, we should know the test inside out! This is especially helpful when working on the Writing section. For example, it’s not enough to know about the section’s format:

  1. Do you know the specific question types for Task 2? It could be any of the following:
    • Agree or disagree
    • Advantages or disadvantages
    • Discuss both views
    • Problem/Solution
  2. Do you know the suggested essay structures for each of the above? It will vary according to the question type, but typically you will need:
    • Introduction
    • Body Paragraph x2
    • Conclusion

If you’re planning to take the IELTS test, and you’ve never heard of the above in your life, then that’s your cue to get to know the IELTS test better!

How Are You Approaching The Questions?

IELTS test-takers won’t just spend the whole of the exam writing, listening, or filling in answers. There are also other things we can do. A GREAT example is how we may approach the Listening section.

In the Listening section, you will often be asked to answer question types like Form Completion, Sentence Completion, Short Tasks, and Matching. For these questions, we suggest that you scan what’s on the test paper already and look for keywords that may be related to the topic of the audio recording. Doing this can help you anticipate what the conversation will cover and when answers to the questions may emerge during the recording.

Furthermore, the Speaking section’s topics include many common ones that have been used over the years. These topics include:

  • Your family
  • Your friends
  • Your work
  • Your school
  • Your hometown or home country

Practicing these topics beforehand can make a big difference to your final Speaking section score!

Integrate English Into Your Everyday Life

When preparing for a language test, don’t forget about all the passive learning that can be done! Apart from formal studying, consider the following:

Real-life practice

Do you have a friend, relative, or colleague who is a fluent English speaker? It might be time to invite him or her to speak only English with you. This may seem a bit strange at first, especially if you and that person have usually conversed in another language in the past, but having a friendly, sympathetic figure to correct your language mistakes and provide suggestions can help you extend your studying into a dynamic real-world setting. You could even consider getting a language partner to ensure that both sides are fully motivated about their language goals.

English media

The world is overflowing with movies, TV shows, music, and podcasts that are not only in English but also feature speakers of its specific variations (US, UK, Australian, etc.). This is one of the great advantages available to English learners – no matter your targets or your interests, you will be able to find the right media to personalise your learning journey and make the language relevant to you!

How We Can Help

Aside from all these tips, don’t forget that we can help too! Whether you’re unsure about how to get started on IELTS, need specific help that’s tailored to you, or are just curious about this test, why not give us a ring to get your learning journey going and to receive a FREE trial lesson?

Back in September of 2018, ACT made the change to computer-based tests for all students outside the US. It’s only time that the SAT will follow suit.

College Board has recently announced that the SAT (and also PSAT) will also become a computer-based test starting in 2023. The SAT will become digital first, beginning with the March 2023 test. PSAT will go computer based starting Fall of 2023.

The major advantage of taking the test online will be a quicker turnaround time for score calculation. Students will be able to receive their test scores in a few days instead of weeks. College Board also suggests that these tests will be unique for each student (but did not elaborate whether it will the order of questions that are different, or two students may receive different questions), thus eliminating the possibility of a “leak test”, which can affect all students taking the same exam.

The scores will still be out of 1600. However, the digital test will be shorter: two hours instead of three for the current paper test. Students will also be given more time per question.

The format will also be slightly changed. For the reading section, students will be given shorter passages with one question per passage. There will also be a wider selection of topics for these passages. For the math sections, there will only be one instead of two, and the students will be able to use a calculator for the entire section.

All tests before the March 2023 exam will still be paper-based. We will let you know when we find out more about the detailed changes.

By The Edge Learning Center

We’ve recently seen increasing interest in the ISEE as an alternative to the SSAT. Could this test be a better fit for your school admission needs? Read on to find out!

Quick Facts

There are three versions of the ISEE: Upper Level, Middle Level, and Lower Level. The Lower Level is 2 hours and 30 minutes, while the Upper and Middle Level are both 2 hours and 50 minutes.

LevelApplying To...
US grade systemUK equivalentHK equivalent
ISEE UpperGrade 9 and aboveY10 and aboveForm 3 and above
ISEE MiddleGrade 7-8Y8-9Form 1 to 2
ISEE LowerGrade 5-6Y6-7P5 to P6

For all three levels, the ISEE has four sections in the following order:

  1. Verbal Reasoning – This section tests vocabulary
  2. Quantitative Reasoning – This is the first of two maths sections. The Lower Level version will have word problems only. The Middle and Upper Level versions have both word problems and quantitative comparison questions. For the latter, you will be asked to determine which of two mathematical expressions has a greater value.
  3. Reading Comprehension – This section includes long reading passages and some corresponding reading comprehension questions.
  4. Mathematics Achievement – This is the other maths section. It involves more advanced maths concepts and is calculation-heavy.

There is also an essay component. Just like the SSAT, your essay is not graded, but it will be submitted along with your test score when applying to schools.

Finally, just like the SSAT, your ISEE score will have a scaled score component and a corresponding percentile score. The percentile score is used to denote how well you did when compared to other test-takers in your grade.

Differences to SSAT

So why should one consider taking the ISEE instead of the SSAT? A few things:

Do you like maths?

Due to the breadth of mathematical skills that are tested by the ISEE, those who are well-rounded at maths are a particularly good fit for this test. This includes students who are good at word problems, skilled at recalling maths concepts, and who can evaluate different types of mathematical expressions.

What about your vocabulary?

For those of us who aren’t bookworms or who like STEM subjects at school, the ISEE is also seriously worth considering because vocabulary recall is not tested as much. Instead, answering the sentence completion questions in the Verbal Reasoning section requires a good understanding of how to read into the context of a sentence. This is a more engaging, realistic, and fulfilling approach to vocabulary when compared to rote memorisation.

What are your reading habits?

With that being said, the ISEE’s reading section contains longer and denser passages than the SSAT. However, this can be seen as a tradeoff to make if you know that vocabulary isn’t your strong suit. Plus, the ISEE won’t have poetry in this section; the SSAT does occasionally include poetry in its reading section.

How we can help

If you’re still not sure whether the ISEE is the right fit for your admissions needs, we’re happy to help! Simply give us a ring to see if we can arrange a mock test, trial 1-on-1 lessons, or even a FREE 30 minutes with our Admissions Consultants to discuss testing, school applications, and more!

The festive season is here! Families are congregating, people are loving/hating their presents, and many Christmas carols are being sung to the merriment of all. Sadly, not content with disrupting the busy schedules of high school juniors, the SAT has even managed to steal Christmas from us by putting it into a practice Reading passage! What horseplay! What tomfoolery! Can I see this passage?

Below are two excerpts from the practice Reading passage in question. It is a narrative passage. At this point, our bibliophile narrator is about to receive a Christmas gift from a friendly bookstore:

One Christmas Sempere gave me the best gift I have ever received. It was an old volume, read and experienced to the full.

Great Expectations, by Charles Dickens,” I read on the cover.

(Lines 47-51)

That afternoon I took my new friend home, hidden under my clothes so that my father wouldn’t see it. It was a rainy winter, with days as gray as lead, and I read Great Expectations about nine times, partly because I had no other book at hand, partly because I did not think there could be a better one in the whole world and I was beginning to suspect that Mr. Dickens had written it just for me. Soon I was convinced that I didn’t want to do anything else in life but learn to do what Mr. Dickens had done.

(Lines 59-68)

Let’s now use this Christmas-specific portion of the passage to examine a Detail-Evidence question pair from the passage’s accompanying questions:

Question 5

Question 5 is what we call an Implicit Detail question. The word “inferred” tells us that we are looking for a detail from the passage that is not explicitly written down. However, the answer will be a detail that the reader can arrive at after combining two details that have been explicitly written down.

First, let’s first recall the moment when the narrator introduces the gift:

One Christmas Sempere gave me the best gift I have ever received. It was an old volume, read and experienced to the full.

Great Expectations, by Charles Dickens,” I read on the cover.

(Lines 47-51)

We learn that Great Expectations was the best gift he had ever received. Next, let’s go to the moment where the narrator discusses his experience with Great Expectations:

That afternoon I took my new friend home, hidden under my clothes so that my father wouldn’t see it. It was a rainy winter, with days as gray as lead, and I read Great Expectations about nine times, partly because I had no other book at hand, partly because I did not think there could be a better one in the whole world and I was beginning to suspect that Mr. Dickens had written it just for me. Soon I was convinced that I didn’t want to do anything else in life but learn to do what Mr. Dickens had done.

(Lines 59-68)

Based on the highlighted portions of the excerpt, we can see that the narrator:

    1. Thinks that there is no way there can be a better book than Great Expectations
    2. Wonders if Charles Dickens had written it just for him
    3. Wanted nothing else in life but to “learn to do what Mr. Dickens had done”

Notice how point 3) is just answer A), but reworded! Plus, if we use our logical reasoning, it’s perfectly reasonable to infer that the fact that Great Expectations is the narrator’s favorite book would be linked to how the book compelled him to want to be a writer (i.e. “learn to do what Mr. Dickens had done”).

Of course, without the context of the entire passage, it’s valid for us to wonder if some of the other answer choices could also be acceptable. That’s where Q6, an Evidence question, comes in. These questions often follow a Detail question and will ask the test-taker to justify his or her choice for the previous qeustion.

For this example, notice how Q6’s answer D) corresponds to the last sentence of the paragraph – the same one we used to work out the answer to Q5. Secure in the knowledge that we have found the evidence for Q5 that the test wanted us to find, we can go ahead answer A for Question 5 and D for Question 6.

Merry Christmas! For additional SAT help like this, or for help with the ACT, SSAT, English proficiency tests, or any other standardized tests, why not give us a ring to see how we can help.

SAT or ACT

In the past few years, many schools are making the submission of SAT or ACT scores optional. However, this should not stop students from taking the test. If a student can obtain a good score on one of these two tests, it is always a bonus for the application.

The key is to get a good score. Both the ACT and SAT are ways to predict a student’s ability to do well in university, meaning that they are both just as difficult. Students shouldn’t be asking “which one is easier” as they make the choice between the two. Depending on the students’ abilities, one test may be a better fit than the other. When it’s easier for students to prepare for these tests, they will generally be able to improve on their scores faster and with less effort.

To help students make a sound choice, here are some questions you can ask yourself to help determine which one is a better fit.

1. Am I comfortable with reading information and working through problems quickly?

If you answer to this question is yes, ACT will be a better fit. The pace on the ACT is much quicker compared to the SAT. On the ACT, students are given about two-third of the time compared to the similar section on the SAT. This leaves little room for you to make mistakes or second-guess yourself. If you work well under pressure, and you are a meticulous person rarely committing careless mistakes, you will find that the ACT will reward you for such precision.

2. Can I understand more advanced concepts and apply the knowledge to solve more complex problems?

Being able to understand and apply advanced ideas tends to mean that SAT is the right test for you. To compensate for the quick pace, questions on the ACT tend to be more straightforward but broad. SAT, on the other hand, focuses on narrower topics but expects you to be able to understand these topics in a more in-depth way. This means that for choosing the ACT, expect to learn and know many topics, while for choosing the SAT, expect to be an expert on a smaller set of topics.

3. Do I enjoy getting hands-on with scientific experiments and finding patterns in data?

The biggest difference between the ACT and SAT is the Science section that is present in ACT but not SAT. If you have enjoyed the various scientific topics learned throughout your academic, tackling the ACT Science section should be a breeze. Even if you did not study any scientific subjects extensively prior to taking the test, you can still do well with an analytical mind. The Science section on the ACT is more about your ability to link various information together, not as much about scientific knowledge.

4. Do I prefer reading about the findings of scientific discoveries and their ramifications?

Three of the five passages on the SAT Reading section are about science, so if you prefer reading about how scientists tackle a hypothesis or verify a conjecture, you will find yourself having an easier time preparing for the SAT. While the authors of these passages will apply technical (sometimes quite advanced) terms in their writing (they are scientists themselves, after all), the focus is on the your understanding on how the authors present their views. Similar to the ACT, the purpose is not to test your scientific knowledge but using scientific background to determine your ability to follow, understand, and digest logical arguments.

Even students who have done extremely well in their classes can find these tests challenging. They key to success is to apply your own strength to maximize your score. If you are still not sure which test is better for you, try to experience them first-hand. With the right mind-set and perseverance, this is one obstacle that anyone can overcome.
